A set of “MUST KNOW !!” tips from the KOYABAN on Northern Alps customs

【Experience the Japanese culture and custom thru the Northern Alps】
〜 A set of “MUST KNOW !!” tips from
the KOYABAN on Northern Alps customs

To all the fellow foreign mountain climbers

The number of climbers in the Northern (North) Alps has increased over the years. This is SO WELCOME, and we are VERY HAPPY to have every one of you. But at the same time, the numbers of accidents and cases of damaged ecosystem being reported has gone up as well…, now this is a PROBLEM.
If this situation is because of the lacking information on the Northern Japanese Alps, please make the passage from here on down useful. Listed below are words from the masters of the lodges in the Northern Alps(a.k.a KOYABAN). A peep from KOYABAN’s common senses and manners for enjoying the mountains of NIPPON.
The KOYABAN truly wishes the BEST and the SAFETY on every one of our fellow climbers on their expedition. Also we would like to appreciate for the understanding, support and participation.
We DO NOT want to see another depressed face on our fellow climbers after being caught up in an accident, and we HAVE TO PROTECT our precious and delicate environment. THANK YOU.

 【ON the MOVE】
It is common in the Northern Japanese Alps (and other mountains in Japan as well )that a climber or the party should reach their goal(the mountain lodge) until 3(15) o’clock. 4(16)o’clock at the least and no latter than sundown.
If you came by a tour plan, please stick to your tour group and DO NOT go on a SOLO.
If your party/group consists of 4 or more people, please double check to be sure there is vacancy at the lodge, and inform the staff your time of arrival. And please give a call if it might be difficult to meet the time you have told the lodge staff.
(
※ In the Northern Alps, NTT DoCoMo’s mobile phone is highly recommended.)

【Clothing】
There is no shops at the start point of the Northern Alps mountain trails.
Please be equipped with the right gear and goods to start off with. (Sandals are OUT OF THE QUESTION!!)
For safety, please wear long sleeves and pants, and color of clothing that stand out is most favorable and common.
Please have raincoats for mountain climbing ready to go. They are a bit expensive, BUT they are WORTH the price!!

 【Consideration】
Strong aroma from exotic food might give an unpleasant feeling to the people around. So please give it a second thought before opening it up. NOT everyone share the same BACKGROUND, CULTURE and TASTE. (Imagine someone eating NATTOU in your face, for an example.)
Plastic bags do come in handy, but since it makes noise at the time of use, please be careful during early morning and deep in the night. For an early start next morning, it is likely to be prepared during the night, before going to sleep. Please show thoughtfulness early in the morning.

The nature of the Northern Alps is irreplaceable, and very precious to Japan and the earth. Because of the high altitude where large number microbes can’t exist, garbage doesn’t decompose easily. So please take home what you came out with.
For nature preserve, please use the appointed mountain trails ONLY.
Water is valuable resource we cannot waste. NO SHOWERS and LAUNDRIES on site, SAVEWATER!!
In some medias oversea uses the expression “HIKING” when the Northern Alps are introduced. BUT, when actually coming to the Northern Alps, please be ready to go “MOUTAIN CLIMBING” or “TREKKING”. The routes are NOT at the “HIKING” level.

 LASTLY…
This might have been a bit preachy, but that’s how much we care about you and the nature-!! Some of the rules and manners might differ from those from your country’s, as the saying goes “When in Japan do as the Japanese do.” We hope you experience a safe and a wonderful time.
